Melbourne City has etched its name into the history books, becoming the first club in Australia – and across Asia – to secure qualification for three consecutive AFC Women’s Champions League campaigns.
Sunday’s gutsy 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers confirmed City’s place in the 2026/27 continental competition, with no other Australian side now able to surpass Michael Matricciani’s team on the Ninja A-League Women table.
It marks a significant milestone for the Club and Matricciani’s squad, who has combined consistency with quality throughout the campaign, and Sunday’s result ensures their continental journey will continue for a third straight season – an unprecedented achievement in the competition’s short history.
But with plenty still to play for, City’s attention quickly turns to an enormous fortnight ahead.
Just one week on from securing qualification for next season’s competition, City will host Uzbekistani side PFC Nasaf in a blockbuster AFC Women’s Champions League Quarter Final at the Home of the Matildas on Sunday 29 March, with kick-off at 3:00pm.
A place in the final four is on the line in what shapes as one of the biggest matches in the Club’s history, as City look to continue their push for continental success on home soil.
Domestically, the stakes remain just as high. City will round out the regular season against Newcastle Jets on Sunday 5 April, with hopes of securing a third consecutive Premiers Plate still alive heading into the final matchday.
With a historic Champions League qualification secured, a home Quarter Final looming, and silverware still within reach, it’s all to play for as City enter a defining period of the season.
