Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday night’s return to AAMI Park.

The home stretch is here

With the pointy end of the season fast approaching, every match now carries added significance as City looks to secure a place in the Finals.

The ladder remains tightly congested heading into the final rounds, meaning there is little margin for error across the final five fixtures. While results have been mixed at times throughout the campaign, there were encouraging signs prior to the international break.

A hard-fought 1-0 win away to Sydney FC, secured through a Max Caputo header, was followed by a strong performance in Perth just days later.

On that occasion, Daniel Arzani’s first-half strike had City on track for another three points, only for a late equaliser to see the spoils shared.

While that result left a sense of frustration, the break has provided an opportunity to reset and refocus, with full attention now turning to what shapes as a defining stretch of the season, beginning with Saturday night’s clash against the Wanderers.

A huge week awaits

City’s run home presents both opportunity and challenge in equal measure, with four of the final five fixtures to be played at AAMI Park.

Saturday’s meeting with Western Sydney marks the beginning of a demanding stretch, with three home games to be played across eight days. Central Coast Mariners await on Tuesday night, before Wellington Phoenix visit the following Sunday.

With a game in hand still to be played, this block of fixtures looms as a crucial window to climb the ladder and strengthen a push for a top-six finish. Nine points will be on offer across the three matches, and capitalising on home advantage will be key.

Saturday will also be the third meeting between City and the Wanderers this season, with the previous two encounters both ending in 1-1 draws at CommBank Stadium. Max Caputo found the net in the opening round clash, while Aziz Behich was on target with a superb free kick when the sides met again in February.

No shortage of starting options

After navigating periods of the season impacted by injury, City now finds itself in a much healthier position heading into the final weeks, providing Aurelio Vidmar with valuable depth across the pitch.

The return of Andreas Kuen from suspension is set to bolster the midfield, though it also creates a selection headache with competition for places intensifying. Across the park, there are a number of players pushing for starting roles.

Harrison Delbridge offers an experienced option in defence, while further forward, Andrew Nabbout continues to build towards full fitness and could be in line for increased minutes after his recent return from injury.

Meanwhile, the likes of Medin Memeti, Emin Durakovic and Zane Schreiber all present alternative options across attack and midfield.

With form, fitness and depth all aligning at a crucial time of the season, Vidmar’s selections on Saturday night will be closely watched.
