ALM REPORT: City 3-0 Western Sydney

Melbourne City secured a valuable three points on Easter Saturday, producing a professional performance to defeat Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park.

Marcus Younis played a starring role in the victory, involved in all three goals on a night that also featured a memorable A-League debut, a controversial red card and plenty of drama across the 90 minutes.

Aurelio Vidmar made two changes to his starting XI, with one of those enforced.

Patrick Beach was ruled out after picking up a quad niggle while away on Socceroos duty, opening the door for 22-year-old Academy product James Nieuwenhuizen to start between the sticks for his A-League debut.

Elsewhere, Andreas Kuen returned to the midfield following suspension, with Kavian Rahmani shifting to the bench.

Starting XI:  40. James NIEUWENHUIZEN (GK), 13. Nathaniel ATKINSON, 22. Germán FERREYRA, 26. Samuel SOUPRAYEN, 16. Aziz BEHICH (C), 8. Ryan TEAGUE, 30. Andreas KUEN, 14. Daniel ARZANI, 28. Marcus YOUNIS, 11. Elbasan RASHANI, 17. Max CAPUTO.

Substitutes:  60. Lachie CHARLES (GK), 2. Harrison DELBRIDGE, 15. Andrew NABBOUT, 19. Zane SCHREIBER, 36. Harry SHILLINGTON, 39. Emin DURAKOVIC, 47. Kavian RAHMANI.

What happened?

It was a frantic start to proceedings, with Nieuwenhuizen called into action inside the opening minute. The young goalkeeper reacted well to deny an initial effort from Jai Rose, before Germán Ferreyra produced an important block to keep out the follow-up as City weathered early pressure.

The Wanderers continued to press, registering a flurry of early chances, but City soon began to settle and create opportunities of our own in an open and end-to-end contest.

Daniel Arzani was heavily involved in the early attacking moments, going agonisingly close in the 12th minute when he broke through on goal, only to see his effort drift inches wide. He was denied again just minutes later, while Younis also tested Lawrence Thomas with a driven strike as City began to build momentum.

That pressure paid off in the 23rd minute. Younis surged forward down the right before finding Kuen in space, and the Austrian midfielder made no mistake, turning sharply and firing a precise finish into the bottom corner to give City the lead.

We doubled our advantage just ten minutes later, and once again Younis was at the heart of it. Picking up a deflected pass from Arzani, the winger let fly from distance, with his strike taking a deflection and looping over Thomas into the back of the net.

Despite the Wanderers edging the shot count in the first half, City headed into the break firmly in control with a two-goal cushion.

City made one change at half-time, with Zane Schreiber replacing Ryan Teague who was dealing with knee soreness, and we wasted no time extending our lead after the restart.

Just four minutes into the second half, Nathaniel Atkinson released Younis down the right, and the winger showed his pace before delivering a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Elbasan Rashani, who finished expertly to score his first A-League Men goal and make it 3-0.

Nieuwenhuizen continued to impress on debut, producing a strong diving save in the 65th minute to deny Steven Ugarkovic as the Wanderers looked to respond.

However, the game took a dramatic turn shortly after. In a highly controversial moment, Younis was shown a second yellow card and sent off after the referee changed his initial decision following consultation with the fourth official.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, City remained in control and continued to create chances. Atkinson and substitute Emin Durakovic both went close in the late stages, while the backline stood firm to limit the Wanderers’ opportunities.

City ultimately saw out the contest professionally, with Nieuwenhuizen capping a memorable debut by keeping a clean sheet.

What’s next?

A quick turnaround awaits for City, who will return to AAMI Park on Tuesday night for an important midweek clash against Central Coast Mariners as we look to continue building momentum in the run home.
