ALM PREVIEW: City v Wellington

Melbourne City is back at AAMI Park for the third time in eight days this Sunday, set to take on Wellington Phoenix in another pivotal clash in the race for Finals.

It’s been an impressive homestand so far for City, with back-to-back wins building momentum at a crucial stage of the season. With just three games remaining, Aurelio Vidmar’s side now turns its attention to further strengthening our Finals credentials with another strong performance on home soil.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Sunday’s clash.

Three from three?

It has shaped as a season-defining run of home fixtures for City, and so far, Vidmar’s men have delivered. Consecutive wins over Western Sydney Wanderers and Central Coast Mariners have not only yielded six valuable points, but also showcased the growing cohesion and quality within the squad.

A commanding 3-0 victory was followed by another composed display midweek, where City looked on track for a second straight clean sheet before conceding late in a 2-1 win over the Mariners. Despite that late blemish, there was plenty to like in the performance, particularly in the team’s control of the contest across both games.

James Nieuwenhuizen has impressed during this period, stepping in admirably for first-choice goalkeeper Patrick Beach. However, the Socceroos shot-stopper is expected to be in contention for a return on Sunday, providing a further boost as City looks to complete a perfect three-from-three homestand.

With the Finals race tightening, another three points at AAMI Park would represent a significant step towards securing a place in the top six.

Two in-form sides collide

City will need to be at our best on Sunday, with Wellington arriving as one of the competition’s form teams. Under interim coach Chris Greenacre, the Phoenix have reignited their season with three consecutive wins, thrusting themselves firmly back into Finals contention.

It sets the stage for a genuine six-pointer, with both sides well aware of what is at stake. A win for Wellington would see them leapfrog City on the ladder, while a victory for us would strengthen our grip on a Finals position and edge us closer to a league-record 12th consecutive Finals appearance.

The two sides have already produced a dramatic contest this season. When we met across the Tasman, Wellington raced to a two-goal lead before City mounted a spirited comeback. Goals from Marcus Younis and Medin Memeti, along with a late penalty save from Patrick Beach, ensured the points were shared in a thrilling draw.

With both teams in strong form and plenty on the line, another closely fought encounter is expected.

Attacking threats aplenty

After periods where goals proved difficult to come by earlier in the campaign, City’s attack has begun to click into gear at exactly the right time. The past two matches have seen a more fluid and cohesive front third, with multiple players stepping up to make an impact.

Marcus Younis was central to our attacking output against Western Sydney, playing a role in all three goals with one strike and two assists before missing the midweek clash through suspension. His likely return to the starting XI presents a welcome selection dilemma for Vidmar, with several players pushing for inclusion.

Daniel Arzani and Elbasan Rashani have both looked increasingly dangerous in recent weeks, while Andreas Kuen continues to influence games from midfield with his creativity and composure. Andrew Nabbout has also provided a spark off the bench, making an immediate impact with a goal against the Mariners and building momentum with each appearance since returning from injury.

With competition for places intensifying and confidence growing, City will be aiming to produce another sharp attacking display as it looks to extend its winning run.
