ALW SF LEG 2 PREVIEW: City v Victory

Melbourne City will resume our Ninja A-League Semi Final tie with Melbourne Victory holding a narrow advantage on Saturday afternoon at ctrl:cyber Pitch.

After a disciplined and hard-fought First Leg performance at AAMI Park last weekend, Michael Matricciani’s side now turns full attention towards completing the job and booking a place in the Grand Final.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s decisive second leg.

A big second half ahead

There’s always a unique feel that comes with a two-legged Semi Final tie, and that’s exactly the situation we now find ourselves in, effectively heading into the ‘second half’ of the contest with a 1-0 lead on aggregate.

Last weekend’s First Leg at AAMI Park largely went to plan for Matricciani’s side, with a composed and defensively strong performance earning City a valuable advantage heading into the decisive fixture.

In what proved a cagey and tightly contested Derby across the 90 minutes, it was ultimately a moment of brilliance that separated the sides. Leticia McKenna stepped up on the stroke of half-time and somehow found a way through a sea of bodies from a free kick to hand City the lead in the tie.

While we would’ve loved to have created a slightly bigger cushion, there was plenty to like about the defensive steel shown throughout the evening, restricting Victory’s opportunities and keeping a crucial clean sheet.

Now attention turns to ctrl:cyber Pitch, where City will look to finish the job in front of our fans.

It won’t come easy though against a fired-up Victory side with nothing to lose. Expect the visitors to come aggressively in search of an early breakthrough, meaning another disciplined and composed defensive performance will be required from City while also looking to find a goal that could provide some breathing room in the tie.

Any need to change a winning mix?

City enters the decisive second leg with a settled squad and no confirmed omissions from last weekend’s First Leg.

There is positive news surrounding 19-year-old winger Danella Butrus, who has been added to the extended squad after progressing well in her recovery from a concussion suffered while on international duty last month. Speaking to media on Friday morning, Matricciani said a final decision on her availability would likely come closer to kick-off.

The depth available to City also leaves the coaching staff with several strong options should any tweaks be considered. Laura Hughes, Alexia Apostolakis and Deven Jackson were all used from the bench in the First Leg, with each having featured heavily as starters throughout different periods of the season.

Whether there is any reason to alter a winning combination remains another question entirely after a strong all-round display at AAMI Park last Saturday.

Regardless of who is named in the starting XI, City appears well-equipped to deal with whatever challenges Saturday afternoon presents, with quality and experience available across the pitch and from the bench.

A spot in the decider on the line

There’s no denying the significance of Saturday’s clash, with a place in the 2026 Ninja A-League Grand Final awaiting the winner of the Semi Final tie.

Should City progress, we’ll face either Brisbane Roar or Wellington Phoenix in next weekend’s decider.

While City has continued to add silverware to the trophy cabinet in recent seasons with a history-making three consecutive Premiers Plates, the Championship remains the final piece the squad is desperate to reclaim.

City has lifted the Championship trophy on four occasions previously, including an incredible run of three consecutive titles from 2016 to 2018, with our last triumph coming in 2020.

Victory will arrive equally desperate to keep their season alive after suffering Grand Final heartbreak themselves last campaign, setting the stage for another massive chapter in the Melbourne Derby rivalry with everything on the line at ctrl:cyber Pitch.
