Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s decider.
The big dance arrives
After 20 rounds and three weeks of Finals football, the Ninja A-League season will come to its conclusion on Saturday evening when City and Wellington fight it out for Championship glory.
City is no stranger to the Grand Final stage, having previously lifted the Championship trophy on four occasions. Despite the Club’s dominance throughout the regular season in recent years, securing a history-making three consecutive Premiers Plates, the Championship has remained elusive since 2020, adding even more motivation heading into Saturday night.
While there is plenty of experience throughout Michael Matricciani’s squad, only Captain Rebekah Stott and veteran goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri have previously tasted Championship success in City colours, with many of City’s current stars chasing that moment for the first time.
Standing in our way is a Wellington side preparing for one of the biggest occasions in New Zealand football history. Saturday will mark the first time a New Zealand-based club has appeared in an A-Leagues Grand Final across either the Men’s or Women’s competitions, ensuring the Phoenix will arrive in Melbourne with a whole country behind them.
History out the window
City booked our place in the Grand Final with a composed 2-0 aggregate Semi Final win over Melbourne Victory, while Wellington needed extra time to edge past Brisbane Roar and secure their own place in the decider.
On paper, the matchup appears favourable for City, who have won all eight meetings between the two sides since Wellington entered the competition in 2022/23.
The numbers do tell a slightly deeper story though, with the last six of those victories coming by a single-goal margin, highlighting just how competitive this fixture has become over the past few seasons.
That trend continued this year, with City recording a narrow 1-0 win at home before claiming a hard-fought 2-1 result across the ditch.

Speaking with media during the week, Head Coach Michael Matricciani was quick to praise Wellington, describing the Phoenix as one of the toughest sides in the competition to come up against.
With a Championship on the line, previous meetings and records will count for little once the whistle blows on Saturday night. Expect another fiercely contested battle between two teams desperate to finish the season with silverware.
No rest for the wicked
A unique challenge also awaits City this weekend, with the Club’s attention set to quickly shift from the domestic stage to Asia once the Grand Final concludes.
Should City secure the Championship on Saturday night, celebrations will need to be short-lived, with the squad scheduled to depart for South Korea at 7am on Sunday morning ahead of next Wednesday’s AFC Women’s Champions League Semi Final against Tokyo Verdy Beleza.
It’s certainly an unusual situation for players and staff, who will have little time to reflect on the result at AAMI Park before turning their attention to another enormous challenge on the continental stage.
For now though, the focus remains firmly on Wellington and the opportunity in front of City on Saturday night, with the chance to lift a fifth Championship trophy and continue what has already been a remarkable season.
