READY TO GO: City stars set for World Cup knockout clash

The alarm clocks are set and the excitement is building.

After an impressive Group Stage campaign, the Socceroos are just one win away from making history as they prepare for a FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 32 clash against Egypt on Saturday morning (4am AEST).

For Melbourne City fans, there continues to be no shortage of reasons to tune in.

Current City duo Patrick Beach and Aziz Behich, Academy graduates Jordan Bos and Connor Metcalfe, and former City midfielder Aiden O’Neill have all played key roles in Australia’s run to the knockout stages, while former City defender Kai Trewin also remains part of Tony Popovic’s squad, ready if called upon.

With the expanded 48-team format making its FIFA World Cup debut this year, Australia has already reached the knockout stages for just the third time in history. Now comes another opportunity to break new ground, with the Socceroos needing to win a World Cup knockout match for the first time to book their place in the Round of 16.

Standing in their way is an unbeaten Egypt side led by Mohamed Salah, with the Pharaohs progressing through Group G without defeat after recording one win and two draws.

For the Socceroos, few players have captured the imagination quite like Beach.

The City goalkeeper arrived at the tournament expecting to learn from more experienced teammates, but instead has emerged as one of Australia’s breakout performers, starting all three group matches and keeping clean sheets against Turkiye and Paraguay.

Despite his impressive start to life on football’s biggest stage, the 22-year-old told media earlier in the week his mindset hasn’t changed.

“I came in not expecting anything. I came in to give it my best, work my hardest and improve every day, and that’s still my mindset now,” Beach said.

Beach’s performances have also seen him share the World Cup stage with City captain Aziz Behich, who returned to Australia’s starting XI against Paraguay to make his first start of the tournament after featuring in every match at both the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.

“Aziz has helped me a lot since I started a few years ago at Melbourne City. He’s helped me grow up a lot as a person and as a player,” Beach said.

“It was really special to share the pitch with him at a World Cup. Playing club football is one thing but to be able to play with a club teammate at a World Cup is a really special moment.”

Elsewhere, Academy graduates Jordan Bos and Connor Metcalfe have continued to impress throughout the tournament, with Bos barely missing a minute of action and Metcalfe scoring in Australia’s crucial win over Turkiye and starting two of the three group matches.

Former City midfielder Aiden O’Neill has also been ever-present, earning Player of the Match honours against Paraguay after another commanding midfield display.

While Mathew Leckie has unfortunately departed the squad through injury, Trewin remains available as a defensive option should Popovic call upon his versatility.

As the Socceroos prepare for another historic occasion, Behich says the belief within the group has never been stronger.

“We’re in a good headspace,” he said, “We’ve just got to prepare and focus on ourselves, and that’s what we’ve done from day one.”

“We’ve always said we want to do something special with this group, and why can’t it be us? We feel like we’ve got a great opportunity. We’ve created this opportunity through our hard work, and we’re full of confidence that this group can do something special in this campaign.”

Whether you’re setting the alarm, staying up through the night or joining fellow supporters at AAMI Park or Federation Square, one thing is certain: we’ll all be cheering on the Socceroos – and the many familiar City faces – as they chase a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
