Melbourne City FC has strengthened its goalkeeping stocks ahead of the 2026/27 season, securing the signing of experienced goalkeeper Macklin Freke on a two-year deal.
Freke arrives in Melbourne following more than a decade at Brisbane Roar, where he progressed through the Academy ranks before making 75 senior appearances across all competitions.
Having earned his opportunity as Brisbane’s first-choice goalkeeper, the 27-year-old was named the Club’s Player of the Year following an outstanding 2024/25 campaign.
Comfortable in possession and dependable between the posts, Freke is well suited to City’s style of play and approach to building from the back.
Freke has already joined his new teammates in pre-season training and forms part of City’s goalkeeping group alongside James Nieuwenhuizen and Lachie Charles.
City will begin its new campaign this Sunday with an Australia Cup Round of 32 clash away to Weston Bears FC.
Melbourne City FC Director of Football Michael Petrillo said Freke had the qualities and experience to make a strong contribution at City.

Freke said he was excited to embrace a new challenge at City.
