A new Brazilian is about to touch down in Melbourne.
With Matheus Rossetto set to arrive in the coming days after completing a loan move for the 2026/27 season, he’ll soon become the sixth Brazilian to represent the Club across both the Melbourne Heart and Melbourne City eras.
Brazilian footballers have always brought a little something different to the Club. Whether it was Alex Terra’s unforgettable Derby winner, Fred’s trademark flair, Leo Natel’s eye for goal or Bárbara’s commanding presence between the sticks, each has left their own mark on the Club.
So while we count down to Rossetto’s arrival, let’s take a trip down memory lane and look back at every Brazilian to represent the Club.
Alex Terra (43 appearances, 7 goals)
When it comes to Brazilian flair, nobody is remembered more fondly than Alex Terra.
Part of Heart’s inaugural squad in 2010/11, the exciting attacker quickly became one of the Club’s first cult heroes across two memorable seasons.
Terra scored seven goals in 43 appearances, but two stand above the rest.
His winner in the first-ever Melbourne Derby remains one of the most iconic goals in Club history, while his stunning bicycle kick away to Perth Glory just a few months later is still regarded as one of the greatest goals the A-League has ever seen.
Fred (38 appearances, 3 goals)
Already a household name in Australian football before arriving at Heart, Fred returned to Melbourne ahead of the 2011/12 season to join compatriots Alex Terra and Maycon in what we proudly dubbed at the time our growing “samba brigade”.
The classy midfielder was appointed Club captain ahead of the campaign, leading Heart to its first-ever Finals Series while bringing his trademark creativity and flair to the middle of the park. Across two seasons, he made 38 appearances and scored three goals in red and white.
Maycon (13 appearances, 1 goal)
Joining alongside Fred in Heart’s second season, striker Maycon completed the Club’s Brazilian trio.
Although his time in Melbourne was brief, he still featured 13 times and scored once, finding the net in a 1-1 draw against Sydney FC in October 2011.
Eleven of those appearances came alongside current City captain Aziz Behich in one of the earliest chapters of the defender’s professional career.
Leo Natel (29 appearances, 6 goals)
The most recent Brazilian to pull on the Club’s colours, and the only Men’s player to do so in the Melbourne City era, Leo Natel quickly became a fan favourite during his loan spell in 2023/24.
The tricky winger made 29 appearances across the Isuzu UTE A-League and AFC Champions League, scoring six goals and adding six assists before returning to Corinthians at the end of the campaign.
Bárbara (7 appearances, 5 clean sheets)
The only Brazilian to represent our women’s team, Bárbara arrived midway through the 2023/24 season with an extraordinary football CV.
A 69-cap Brazilian international, the experienced goalkeeper immediately made her presence felt, keeping five clean sheets in seven appearances as City marched towards the A-League Women’s Grand Final.
Unfortunately, heartbreak struck on the eve of the decider when a quad injury ruled her out of the Grand Final, bringing a promising stint at City to a frustrating end.
Now, it’s Rossetto’s turn.
The experienced midfielder will soon become the latest Brazilian to represent the Club – and if history is anything to go by, an exciting chapter awaits.
