ALM PREVIEW: Victory v City

Derby Day is almost here!

Melbourne City is back at AAMI Park for the first time this A-League Men’s season, with a blockbuster Melbourne Derby awaiting on Saturday night.

While we’ll technically be the away side, there’s no shortage of motivation for Aurelio Vidmar’s squad as both Melbourne clubs look to bounce back from disappointing opening-round defeats across the ditch.

And with plenty on the line, we’ll need our City fans bringing the noise from the stands!

Here are a few of the biggest talking points ahead of Saturday night’s huge clash!

Back to familiar surroundings

After a tricky opening assignment in Auckland, there’s nothing quite like returning to familiar surroundings – even if Saturday’s Derby is technically an away fixture.

Despite going down 3-1 to last season’s Champions, there were plenty of encouraging signs from City’s performance across the ditch, particularly in the opening 45 minutes.

Perhaps the biggest positive was the performance of young midfielder Quinn MacNicol, who marked his competitive City debut with a brilliantly taken goal to bring us level in the first half.

The 18-year-old looked right at home on the big stage, while fellow youngster Kavian Rahmani also impressed as part of a youthful midfield combination.

Although the result wasn’t what Vidmar and City fans would’ve been hoping for, there were still certainly positives to build on.

Now back at AAMI Park, with the added intensity of a Melbourne Derby, City will be looking to take another step forward and turn those promising signs into our first three points of the season.

Two big inclusions

There could be a couple of exciting new faces in City colours on Saturday night, with two of our biggest off-season arrivals now in contention to make their competitive debuts.

After missing last weekend’s trip to Auckland, Danish playmaker Emiliano Marcondes and Costa Rican defender Julio Cascante have both been included in Vidmar’s extended squad.

Marcondes arrives with a wealth of European experience, having spent much of his career in Denmark and England, and will be looking to add another creative dimension to City’s midfield.

Cascante, meanwhile, brings years of experience in Major League Soccer and international football, adding further quality and depth to our defensive options.

Just how much we’ll see of the pair on Saturday remains to be seen.

Vidmar kept his cards close to his chest when asked about their potential involvement during the week, giving little away about whether either could start or how many minutes they might play.

But one thing’s for sure – City fans will be eager to get their first glimpse of both players in competitive action.

And what better occasion than a Melbourne Derby?

Three in a row at AAMI Park

Saturday night isn’t just a huge fixture in its own right – it’s also the beginning of an important run of matches at AAMI Park.

While the Derby might technically be an away game, it kicks off a stretch of three consecutive fixtures at the venue before the first international break of the season.

Next Saturday brings our official home opener against Sydney FC, with a Halloween clash awaiting as we look to secure our first home points of the campaign.

Western Sydney Wanderers will then make the trip to Melbourne the following weekend, rounding out a challenging opening stretch against quality opponents.

With City eager to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat, the opportunity to build some early-season momentum on familiar turf will be crucial.

Of course, none of those points will come easily, and there’s certainly no bigger stage to begin the run than a Melbourne Derby.

Three straight weekends at AAMI Park. Three massive opportunities to get behind your City boys. It all starts this Saturday night!
