ALM PREVIEW: City v Sydney FC

Our Halloween Home Opener is almost here!

After months of waiting, Aurelio Vidmar’s side is ready to kick off our home campaign this Saturday evening, with Sydney FC making the trip to AAMI Park for a family-friendly 5:00pm showdown.

City will be searching for our first win of the new A-League Men’s season, and what better place to get it than in front of our home fans?

With plenty to look forward to both on and off the pitch, here are three of the biggest talking points ahead of Saturday’s clash!

Bringing the heat early

After a slow start to last weekend’s Melbourne Derby, City will be determined to hit the ground running from the opening whistle on Saturday.

Victory took full advantage of our sluggish opening, striking inside seven minutes to put Vidmar’s side on the back foot.

But City showed plenty of character after the break, producing a much-improved second-half performance to earn a share of the points.

Andrew Nabbout was in the right place at the right time to finish off a beautifully worked team move, opening his account for the season and ensuring we left AAMI Park with something to show for our efforts.

This weekend’s opposition will present another difficult test.

Sydney FC arrives in Melbourne unbeaten through the opening two Matchweeks, having followed a scoreless Sydney Derby with a come-from-behind victory over Adelaide United.

Goals from Rhys Youlley and Oriola Sunday secured all three points last weekend after the Sky Blues had fallen behind early.

With both teams eager to make their mark, a fast start could be crucial in what shapes as another fiercely contested encounter.

…And some fresh faces to do it?

Could a couple of changes to the starting XI provide the spark City needs?

After naming unchanged lineups across our opening two fixtures, Vidmar now has some interesting decisions to make, with several experienced players pushing for greater involvement.

Danish midfielder Emiliano Marcondes made an immediate impression after being introduced at half-time in last weekend’s Derby.

His creativity helped transform City’s attacking play, with the midfielder producing a clever combination with Medin Memeti before setting up Nabbout’s equaliser.

Costa Rican international Julio Cascante also impressed on his competitive debut, providing an assured presence in defence after entering the contest in the 70th minute.

Both will be hoping to take another step forward this weekend, although their match fitness will remain an important consideration after only recently returning to action.

And then there’s Mathew Leckie.

The experienced Socceroo has been gradually building his fitness through the opening two Matchweeks and provided another positive contribution off the bench against Victory.

With all three pushing for more minutes, it’ll be fascinating to see which way the coaching staff goes when Saturday’s starting XI is revealed.

Action on and off the pitch

There’s plenty more than just football to look forward to at AAMI Park this Saturday!

With our Home Opener falling on Halloween, we’re getting into the spooky spirit with a range of activities and entertainment for the whole family.

The fun begins from 3:30pm, when City Trick or Treat Street opens on the stadium forecourt, featuring six Halloween-themed stations where young fans can complete challenges, collect stamps and score some treats.

There’ll also be face painting, Halloween performers, fire breathers and plenty of other activities around the precinct.

And don’t forget to check out our limited-edition Halloween t-shirt, the first release in our special collaboration with Melbourne artist Freo.

Stadium gates open at 4:00pm, giving supporters plenty of time to settle in before the action gets underway.
