Melbourne City FC is delighted to announce the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper, Bárbara, who joins the Club as a free agent for the remainder of the A-League Women’s season.
The 69-times capped Brazilian international brings a wealth of experience to the squad, having represented her country at five FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments and four Olympic Games – winning a Silver Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Born in Recife, Brazil, Bárbara has played in Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Brazil, most recently representing Flamengo in Brazil’s top tier.
An impressive shot-stopper who’s comfortable with the ball at her feet, Bárbara’s inclusion is a huge boost for Head Coach, Dario Vidosic, and his team for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.
The Copa America Femenina winner arrived in Melbourne last week and has joined the squad in training ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brisbane to face the Roar.
Melbourne City FC A-League Women’s Head Coach, Dario Vidosic, said:
“To bring someone of Bárbara’s quality and experience into the squad is a huge boost as we look forward to the most important part of the season.
“Her experience at major tournaments and in top leagues across the world speaks for itself, and we’re excited to welcome her on board.
“We’ve lost a great goalkeeper to an exciting opportunity in Lysianne Proulx, but we’re delighted to secure someone of Bárbara’s quality so quickly and I have no doubt she’ll be a great addition to not only our team, but also the league.”
Bárbara said:
“I’m super happy to play in Melbourne and I want to be able to bring all my 20 years of experience to help the team, I’m super excited to be here.
“For the fans, I want to say that I will give everything, and I will always do my best.
“Just like I did in all the clubs I’ve been to, I want to be able to help the team and leave my mark in Melbourne.”
City fans’ first opportunity to see Bárbara play live will be on Sunday 10 March when Melbourne City host the Newcastle Jets from 4:00pm at City Football Academy.
