5 things to look forward to: Newcastle v City

We’re back in action this week, with Monday night football against the Jets. Ahead of the clash, we take a look at the five things we’re looking forward to.

The ideal start to our New South Wales road trip

City got round 24 off to a perfect start, coming away with a big three points in a 2-4 win over Central Coast on Friday night.

The Mariners led early after a Jordan Murray goal in the second minute, but City fought back hard to be 1-2 up inside 10 minutes. After one in the first, two second half goals to Maclaren completed his hattrick and the win.

City will be looking to carry on that momentum when it takes on Newcastle on Monday night before heading back to Melbourne after spending the weekend in New South Wales.

Jets clean sweep

With this being the third meeting between teams for the season, City will be looking to beat the Jets for the third consecutive time.

City came away with a big 0-4 win in the round 10 clash in Newcastle. Adrian Luna had a double before half time and second half goals to Javier Cabrera and Maclaren provided the icing on the cake.

The round 15 meeting also saw a similar result with City again taking the points, this time 2-0 at home thanks to Craig Noone and Maclaren goals either side of half time.

Macca’s back

After starting the season with nine goals in four games, striker Jamie Maclaren had understandably, cooled off a little. Having scored two goals in eight games leading into last week’s game against Western Sydney, Maclaren now looks to be back in form.

He got some confidence back scoring from the spot against the Wanderers and then backed it up with a hattrick on Friday night. While a lot of his struggles can be put down to the opportunities not being there, Maclaren is again looking very dangerous in front of goal.

Five game undefeated streak?

If City are to pick up at least a draw, it will extend the clubs unbeaten streak to five games.

This will equal the teams longest A-League streak of the season which was back at the start of the season when after drawing the season opener, City won its next five.

This would also be the clubs equal longest winning streak since the middle of the 2017-18 season.
