5 things to look forward to: Western United v City

Melbourne City are set for their first ever league encounter with Western United. Ahead of the clash, we take a look at the five things we’re looking forward to.

A new rivalry

It’s time to hit the road as a new rivalry begins when we travel to Geelong to take on Western United on Sunday afternoon.

As the two sides go head-to-head for the first time in the Hyundai A-League, City will be eager to head home with all three points in hand.

An opportunity to bounce back

There’s no shying away from the disappointment of our midweek FFA Cup Final loss to Adelaide, but that’s the beauty of football, as we’re given an opportunity to bounce back on the weekend.

We may have been outplayed on Wednesday but we’ve built a strong foundation over the pre-season and we’re ready to respond against our new Victorian rivals, Western United.

There’s a first time for everything

Sunday evening’s clash with Western United will be a game of firsts.

Not only is it our first A-League game against our new neighbours, but it’s also our first ever game at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong.

We might be in new surroundings against a new opponent, but we’re up for the challenge.

Magical Macca

Jamie Maclaren extended his stellar preseason form, netting two goals against Adelaide at steering City to victory in his first A-League game of the 19/20 season.

Macca’s Round 2 brace takes him to eight goals in six competitive games to open the season.

The prolific attacker is goal hungry and ready to continue his red-hot run of form in our new rivarly.

Battle between two strong starters

It may only be Round 3, but City and Western United sit third and fourth respectively on the league table.

Sitting all square, both teams have shown glimpses of what they’re capable of in the first couple of weeks.

From Jamie Maclaren to Alessandro Diamanti, we’re set for an entertaining battle between two sides with a lot of attacking quality.
