CATCH UP: 2022/23 A-League Women’s squad begins to take shape

City’s squad for the upcoming A-League Women’s season is looking strong as we edge closer to the beginning of pre-season training.

After a disappointing 2020/21 campaign, Rado Vidosic’s side shot back up the ladder last season off the back of a number of key signings and big improvers across the squad.

The team would eventually fall agonisingly short of securing silverware, but with a large contingent of the squad set to return, motivation levels will be sky-high going into 2022/23.

The likes of skipper Emma Checker, Chelsea Blissett, Naomi Chinnama, Leah Davidson, Leticia McKenna and Darcey Malone were already contracted after having previously signed multi-year deals.

Holly McNamara and Tori Tumeth both were also locked in for this season, but are currently sidelined due to ACL injuries.

A trio of stars from last season who accounted for 75% of City’s goals; Kaitlyn Torpey, Rhianna Pollicina and Hannah Wilkinson, have all re-signed for the new season and look set to build on standout first campaigns in Melbourne.

Bryleeh Henry is the first new signing that’s been announced, the young Matildas attacker signing a two-year deal to join City.

Despite having a professional career that’s already spanned a remarkable 25 years, few would’ve been shocked by this week’s announcement that club stalwart and Australian football legend Melissa Barbieri will return for another season.

13 players may already be locked in, but there’s plenty of big announcements ahead in the coming weeks as we get closer to our season opener on November 20 against Wellington Phoenix! Stay tuned to our club channels to keep up with all the latest news.
