Melbourne City FC has bolstered its A-League Women’s squad ahead of the new season, re-signing young duo Sally James and Caitlin Karic.
After struggling with injury early in her first season with City, James would go on to make four appearances including starting in the Preliminary Final.
James recently was part of the Young Matildas squad for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, impressing with her performances throughout the tournament.
Karic has re-signed through to the end of the 2023/24 season after the young attacker showed plenty of potential in her first season as a professional.
The now-17-year-old was one of the youngest players in the competition last season, making nine total appearances.
Karic was also twice named in the starting line-up, impressing the coaching staff with her development throughout her first season at the level.
She’ll be eyeing off a first professional goal when City kicks off its season in early November.
Head Coach Rado Vidosic said he was pleased that Karic will remain in City colours for the next two seasons.
“Caitlin took some big steps in her development last season, and we expect her to continue to work hard to improve her game and push for more minutes.
“She’s always looking to learn from her more senior teammates and is a very coachable player with a great approach to her game.”
Vidosic also said the re-signing of James was pleasing after the young goalkeeper had an interrupted 2021/22 season.
“Sally was unlucky to get injured on the eve of last season but had a great attitude to her rehab which shows the kind of character she is.
“After some commanding performances and some valuable experience gained at the recent U20 World Cup, we are excited to see her continue her form and development with us this season.”
Karic said it was an easy choice to re-sign with City after an enjoyable first season.
“The environment at the club was so supportive especially for me being a younger player,” Karic said.
“I’m really excited for the next couple of seasons and hope to continue to grow as a player.
“I’m really looking forward to again playing under Rado and doing everything I can to help the team have success on the pitch.”
James was also excited to be back for a second season at City.
“It was great to continue developing outside of my comfort zone and expose myself to a new environment last season,” James said.
“The injury was heartbreaking but that’s football sometimes. It helped me learn patience and that if you keep putting the work in during rehab, a reward will come.
“I can’t wait to be back out on the pitch this season doing what I love.”
