Dobro došao, Marin: Croatian forward joins City on loan

Melbourne City FC is pleased to confirm the signing of talented Croatian forward, Marin Jakolis, on a one-year loan from French Ligue 2 club, Angers SCO.

The 26-year-old joins City with an Australian passport, making him eligible to play without occupying a foreign visa slot in Rado Vidosic’s squad for the 2023/24 season.

Jakolis has represented Croatia at youth level, including 15 appearances and 5 goals for the U21 team. His Australian passport also makes him eligible for the Socceroos.

He made 11 Ligue 1 appearances for his parent club, Angers SCO, before they were relegated to Ligue 2 at the end of the 2022/23 season. He joined Cypriot club AEK Larnaca on loan in January 2023, making 17 appearances, including four in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

A hard-working and versatile right-footer with a touch of class, Jakolis is most comfortable playing on the left wing but has been used on both sides throughout his career.

Jakolis is a pacy winger who loves taking on defenders and is set to bring plenty of excitement to City’s front third this season.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said:

“Marin played last season in one of Europe’s top leagues and is coming into the peak of his career. His move down here indicated how serious he is about joining Melbourne City and I know he has a desire to succeed in the league and potentially push for a spot in the national team.

He is a player who works hard with and without the ball, which is essential to our style of play. Added to this, he has great technical ability, good speed and his excellent dribbling skills allow him to take on defenders 1-on-1. He’s a great recruit for the club.”

Marin Jakolis said:

“My father is Australian, and he lived in Melbourne for 15 years.

“I decided a couple of days after getting the offer that I wanted to join. I didn’t need to think a lot about it, yes, my father is from here, but I saw the opportunity to join the team and help them achieve their goals, so it was an easy choice.

The fans can expect to see a player that will always give 150%. I think I have good dribbling and technical quality but whether it’s a good game or a bad game, I will never drop my effort on the pitch.
