Dobson: We believe in ourselves

Melbourne City FC attacker Rhali Dobson remains confident that her team has what it takes to a book a place in the 2018/19 Westfield W-League finals series.

City suffered a gut-wrenching loss to Brisbane Roar in Round 11, as they failed to capitalise on their dominance in the attacking third, conceding a goal on the counter.

Head Coach Rado Vidosic’s side dominated proceedings for the second consecutive week without reward. With 23 shots at goal, compared to Brisbane’s five, City lived to rue their inability to convert.

City now sit in sixth position on the league ladder, two points outside the top-four. But despite the challenge that lies ahead – with maximum points needed from their clash with Newcastle Jets at home and Sydney FC away – Dobson is confident that with the nature of the league, anything is possible.

“The W-League has shown this year that everyone can beat everyone, so realistically it’s still in our hands,” she explained.

“We can still win both games and make the finals, we believe in ourselves, we just need to start playing to our strengths and playing with a bit of flexibility and we can come out on top.”

City host the Jets in their last home game of the season on Sunday, a task that won’t be easy following Newcastle’s 3-1 win over top-four challengers Perth Glory last weekend.

“It’s going to be a tough game, they’re going to be coming into the match on a high as they played very well against Perth, which is to their credit considering all the injuries that they have had,” the former Newcastle player acknowledged.

“But we’ve got a great record against them, we’re very determined, we’ve worked hard and we are going to play to back each other, play to our strengths and that will hopefully bring us out on top.”

City take on Newcastle at C.B. Smith Reserve on Sunday 20 January, kick-off 7:30pm. Get your tickets here.
