Floreat Athena continued their preparations for August’s Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 tie with a 2-2 draw with ECU Joondalup on Saturday after the match was abandoned after 63 minutes.

Our FFA Cup opponents went two goals down early as the home side took the lead from Gordon Smith and Tommy Amphlett with Joondalup cruising after 28 minutes.

Wellington Phoenix shot stopper and ECU number one Lewis Italiano kept Athena at bay for the remainder of the half however a goal on the stroke of half time from Floreat captain Ludovic Boi ensured his side had a sniff in the second half.

Athena were back in it two minutes after the break as Lewis McMahon converted from the spot and the visitors looked to continue to push for all three points however torrential rain in Perth halted proceeding, with the result standing after more than half of the match had been played.

Floreat will now prepare for this weekend’s Western Australia Cup Final as they take on Cockburn City. They themselves will prepare to take on Victorian opponents in the FFA Cup, taking on NPL Victoria’s Melbourne Knights on Wednesday 10 August.

City will take on Floreat Athena at Perth SC’s home ground, Dorrien Gardens, on Tuesday 2 August, kick-off 8.30pm AEST (6.30pm WA local).
