What happened?
Facing one of the competition’s strongest teams, City endured a difficult opening half as the visitors established a 3-0 advantage before the break.
Despite the scoreline, goalkeeper Dali Gorr Burchmore kept us in the contest with a series of important saves, as the young City side aimed to show composure in possession and looked to build from the back whenever possible.
After the restart, Avondale struck early to extend their advantage, but City refused to retreat. Instead, we lifted our intensity, pressing higher up the pitch and showing greater purpose in transition.
Liliana Lamaj added fresh energy from the bench, while the defensive unit settled into the contest as we began to enjoy longer periods of possession.
Our improved second-half performance was reflected in several promising attacking passages. Izabella Rako looked lively between the lines, driving at defenders and creating openings around the edge of the penalty area.
Our persistence was eventually rewarded with a deserved consolation goal. After we worked the ball into an advanced area with quick, incisive passing, Chelsea Biggs whipped a dangerous delivery into the penalty area, where Sienna Calvanese rose highest to guide a composed header into the back of the net.
This capped off one of City’s best attacking moves of the afternoon and provided a fitting reward for our improved display after the interval.
Although the final score did not fall our way, the second half showcased the resilience and character of the squad that continued to play positively against quality opposition.
City’s willingness to play through pressure and the team’s attacking intent after the break showed encouraging signs as attention now turns to the next round.
What’s next?
We’ll be looking to carry the momentum of an improved second half performance into next Saturday’s away clash against Keilor Park, which kicks off at 3:00pm
