International City: Hughes’ Northern Ireland on the brink of history

Aaron Hughes’ Northern Ireland took another step towards qualifying for its first European Championships this week after their 3-1 win over Faroe Islands.

It was a man of the match performance from West Bromwhich Albion’s Gareth McAuley that saw the defender find the back of the net twice in the convincing victory.

Hughes was an unused sub in the match however the central defender has played a part in four of the seven qualifiers so far with NI sitting in prime position for the automatic qualifying spot.

Northern Ireland can seal their spot in Euro 2016 with a win over Hungary in their next fixture on Monday.

Aaron Mooy and the Socceroos are also in action this week as they take on Tajikistan in Dushanbe. You can see that match this Tuesday at 11pm on Fox Sports and delayed on SBS.
