International City: Mixed bag for Socceroos and Matildas

Socceroos

There was a feast international football in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Socceroos and Matildas both in action with City stars seeing the pitch in both fixtures.

The Socceroos finished undefeated in Group B in their second phase of World Cup Qualifiers, recording a 1-0 win over Jordan thanks to a second half Harry Souttar header.

Teagan Micah, City’s 2020/21 W-League Player of the Year, got her first international cap in the Matildas 0-0 draw with Sweden.

Jamie Maclaren

On a pitch that was closer to resembling a cow paddock than the pristine surface at AAMI Park, Jamie Maclaren didn’t see a whole heap of action in the early stages. The City and Socceroos number nine didn’t have much service in a tight first half, his best chance coming in the 38th minute with a flick on towards goal not having enough power to trouble the ‘keeper.

Maclaren got more involved in the early stages of the second half but with not many chances falling to any player, he couldn’t add to his six international goals and was substituted in the 70th minute.

Curtis Good was an unused substitute, while Mathew Leckie was rested after starting two of the last three matches. Connor Metcalfe wasn’t in the squad after playing the full 90 minutes in the last World Cup Qualifier.

Teagan Micah

Following a strong W-League season in which she was named in the PFA Team of the Season as well as being named City’s Player of the Year, Micah was rewarded with an international debut.

She didn’t take long to settle and immediately looked comfortable at the level.

Micah was tested in the 20th minute with a well-hit strike but reacted quickly to tip it over the bar and would go on to make another couple of saves before the half time whistle.

She wasn’t quite as busy in the second half but still did well to keep a clean sheet on international debut.
