Key Battle: Glover v Duncan

Glover

The A-League 2021 Final Series is just around the corner but before we get there, one game remains of the 2020/21 season.

Melbourne City FC will travel to Sydney to take on Newcastle on Thursday night, the fixture set to kick-off at 7.05pm and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports, Kayo and the My Football Live app.

City goalkeeper Tom Glover has enjoyed a solid season in what has been his first full campaign as the Club’s number one, playing all but one fixture.

Newcastle’s keeping spot hasn’t been quite as secure as City’s, the Jets originally preferring Jack Duncan in-between the sticks before Lewis Itallino was given the opportunity in the middle of the season. Duncan has been the man they’ve liked as of late, appearing in each of the club’s last three fixtures.

Given Duncan’s played eight less games, it’s most fair to compare these keeper on a ‘per game’ basis, and it is Glover that just comes out on top in the stat that matters.

The City keeper has let in an average of 1.1 goals per game, triumphing Duncan’s average of 1.2 by the slimmest of margins.

Duncan gets called into action (2.3 saves per match) a little more often than Glover (1.9), but a lot of this can be put down to the fact that City’s defence has the stronger of the two this season – allowing 30 goals compared to 37.

Glover has kept seven clean sheets so far this season while the Jets’ shot stopper has managed four.

Both keepers use their feet a similar amount but its Glover who’s the most accurate, boasting a 71.9% passing success rate compared to Duncan’s 60.4%.

Neither keeper has caused many issues for referee’s this season, with neither having conceded a foul let alone been booked.
