Match Preview: City v Newcastle

Melbourne City FC will be looking to take the maximum three points against Newcastle Jets on Tuesday night to give itself every chance of finishing top of the A-League Women competition.

The team had its Premiership fate in its own hands until last Thursday, when the combined absences of Rebekah Stott, Hannah Wilkinson and Holly McNamara proved too much to overcome as the City girls went down 1-0 to Brisbane Roar.

The result will have been a painful one for the team, who gave it their all and came incredibly close to finding the back of the net on multiple occasions.

Rado Vidosic’s side will inevitably be determined to seek redemption for the tough loss and will get the chance to do so when the team hosts Newcastle Jets at ABD Stadium for the first time this season.

The Jets will be looking to recover from a bruising defeat of their own, going down 3-0 to Canberra United on Friday night.

Once Finals aspirants, Newcastle has found itself left behind by the breakaway top five and will be a prime candidate for City to bounce back against as it looks to determine its own Finals fate.

The team will be bolstered by the returns of Stott and Wilkinson from international duty, with the fixture also looming as pivotal for the latter to make up some ground on Fiona Worts’ 13 goals, with the Golden Boot appearing to have been Wilkinson’s to lose only a few weeks ago.
