Match Preview: Newcastle v City

Just one game remains before the World Cup break and Melbourne City will be hoping to make it five wins from six games when it faces Newcastle away from home on Saturday.

City has been led by Jamie Maclaren (seven goals in five games) and Mathew Leckie so far this season, with the star duo taking their place in Australia’s 26-man World Cup squad named earlier this week.

They were both on the scoresheet in what was a convincing win over Perth last time out. Although City controlled play throughout the contest, the deadlock remained until the early stages of the second half.

Maclaren continued his run of scoring in every game this season with a quickfire double, before Leckie and Marco Tilio joined the party with late goals.

City has dropped points just once so far this season, a trend Kisnorbo will be hoping to see continue in the final match before the break.

He’s set to welcome Thomas Lam back to the line-up after the Finnish defender served his suspension last time out, and the decision at the selection table could be an easy one with Nuno Reis ruled out due to concussion.

It’s been an up and down start to the season for Newcastle, winning its first two fixtures but going down in its last two. In perhaps a worrying sign for coach Arthur Pappas, the Jets have also been kept goalless in both of those last two fixtures.

City on the other hand have had no such problems, leading the league in goals scored (12) and netting at least two in every match so far.

Kisnorbo’s men have been just as good up the other end of the pitch too, allowing just three goals across its first five fixtures which is also the current benchmark in the league.

City has won three of its past four against Newcastle but didn’t taken any points home from either of its past two trips to McDonald-Jones Stadium.
