Match Preview: Western Sydney v City

Macca

Melbourne City FC are set to take on Western Sydney Wanderers away from home as the side looks to build on their recent 3-2 win over Sydney FC and climb back towards the upper reaches of the table.

The clash

City’s return to form came in a highly anticipated Grand Final rematch that didn’t disappoint.

Jamie Maclaren got himself on the scoresheet twice, using his poacher’s instinct to create big chances at close-range, and assisted the other goal by heading Craig Noone’s cross into the path of Adrian Luna, who was able to bury the opportunity.

Two late goals to Sydney FC gave City fans a scare but the boys were able to close out the game professionally in front of their home crowd.

Sydney FC’s red-and-black crosstown counterpart find themselves in fourth place after nine games, with their most-recent result being a 2-3 loss to Adelaide United last Saturday night.

This was only the Wanderers second loss of the season and they will look to get back to the strong form that has seen them establish themselves in the top half of the table on Tuesday night.

City are currently undefeated in their last three fixtures against the Wanderers, with Jamie Maclaren in hot-form in the same period with four goals and one assist against Western Sydney.

The sides faced off twice in the 2019/20 A-League season, with City emerging victorious in a 2-3 thriller away from home before being held to a 1-1 draw later in the campaign.

Defenders Scott Galloway and Kerrin Stokes have both been promoted to City’s extended squad for Tuesday night’s fixture, while there are currently no outs and Aiden O’Neill remains sidelined due to a back injury.
