Star Melbourne City winger, Mathew Leckie, has been named Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) January Player of the Month.
Voted on by players across the league, it is the second time a City Men’s player has taken out the award this season after Jamie Maclaren was the recipient for November/December.
January was a busy month for City as it went through undefeated (2W, 3D) with our number 7 performing to a high level throughout the five fixtures, finding the back of the net twice in the process.
Teammate Aiden O’Neill was also nominated for January, while midfielder Leah Davidson was amongst the Women’s runners ups.
In typical Mathew Leckie fashion, the winger was quick to shift focus off of the individual accolade and recognise his teammates.
“It’s a big honour to be voted Player of the Month by my peers,” Leckie said.
“It says a lot about my teammates as the whole group has been in some great form as of late. I’m loving my football and am happy to play my role and help contribute to a winning squad.”
There are no plans on slowing down for City and Leckie in particular any time soon, with the Socceroos World Cup hero already having recorded a goal and three assists from the team’s two February fixtures so far.
“Our focus for the rest of the season is just to try and go out there and win every game we can to make sure we’re bringing home silverware for all the City fans out there.”
