Melbourne City FC signs Australian U23 defender Callum Talbot

Melbourne City FC is pleased to announce the signing of defender Callum Talbot on a three-year deal that will see the Australian in a City shirt until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Talbot, 21, is a full-back who can be deployed on both the right and left flanks and will provide depth and versatility to the City squad.

He joins from Sydney FC where he made 23 senior appearances including five in the 2022 AFC Champions League.

Born in Malta, Talbot moved to Australia in 2003 when he was two years old. In October 2021 he was called up to the Australian U23 squad for the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers against Thailand and played in both wins that saw Australia progress.

His youth career began at Gymea United FC before moving on to Sutherland Sharks and then the Football New South Wales National Training Centre (FNSW NTC) in 2015.

In 2019 he joined Sydney FC and made 41 appearances in the NPL across two seasons, scoring 2 goals as a full back.

Talbot made his A-League Men’s debut in January 2021 against Macarthur FC before becoming a regular for Sydney in the 2021/22 season, featuring in 22 matches across all competitions and registering 2 assists.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football Michael Petrillo said:

“When we became aware that Nathaniel Atkinson would be moving, we identified the best young right-backs in Australia. Callum was right at the top of that list and is a player we believe is suited to the type of football we play at Melbourne City.

“He defends well, is good on the ball and works hard off the ball. Allied to that is his willingness to also get forward and attack which aligns with our style of play.

“We look forward to Callum further developing and fulfilling his potential with us over the coming years.”

Callum Talbot said:

“I am absolutely buzzing to be joining such a big Club. Melbourne City has really established a winning culture over the last few years and I look forward to helping continue that.

“There are so many top players at City and I cannot wait to play with them rather than against them.

“I am looking forward to linking up with my new teammates next season and can’t wait to play in front of the City faithful.”
