Pre-season Report: City 1-3 Newcastle

Melbourne City has suffered its first loss of the pre-season on Wednesday going down to the Newcastle Jets 3-1 behind closed doors at CFA Melbourne.

A first half blitz from the visitors secured the result with Andrew Nabbout, Roy O’Donovan and Jose Champness finding the back of the net in the opening stanza.

Despite a better second half showing from Warren Joyce’s men, City were only able to peg one back through the head of Michael Jakobsen as the hosts now look to prepare for the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday.

City had the first chance of the match after six minutes as Jets keeper Glen Moss rocketed his clearance into the back of Bruno Fornaroli. The striker picked up the crumbs and laid off to early substitute Tim Cahill as he blasted wide under pressure.

The sides traded blows in the opening 20 minutes with Nick Fitzgerald going the closest, seeing his deflected shot bounce off the crossbar but it would be the Jets who would open the scoring.

A cleared free-kick saw Nigel Boogard send a looped through ball to Nabbout, beating the City offside trap with only Dean Bouzanis to beat. With the keeper closing the angle, Nabbout found his team mate Champness who tapped in, beating Manny Muscat who was covering the line.

The Jets doubled their lead after 40 minutes as a stray backpass saw O’Donovan beat Bouzanis to the ball, poking underneath the oncoming keeper.

Then a slip from Luke Brattan in the defensive build up play opened the door for Nabbout to pinch the third, seeing the Jets score twice in quick succession.

It was clear Warren Joyce asked for a response from his chargers after the break and they nearly delivered through Bruce Kamau. The forward’s press was rewarded as he picked up the crumbs and ran towards goal but his effort flashed past the upright of Jack Duncan.

City continued to look for a response – this time through Fornaroli – and the striker thought he had found the avenue back into the match before Duncan smothered his volley from point-blank range.

Michael Jakobsen would find the back of the net after 56 minutes as he towered high from a corner to nod strongly past the keeper and the early response looked to have given the home side an avenue back into the match.

The Jets held firm however despite a free-kick from Scott Jamieson hitting the upright and a header metres out going over the bar as the result ended City’s perfect pre-season record.
