WELKOM RICHARD: City sign Dutch midfielder

We are excited to welcome Richard van der Venne to the Club, with the Dutch attacking midfielder signing a two-year deal through to the end of the 2023/24 season.

van der Venne most recently played for RKC Waalwijk in the Eredivisie, Netherlands’ top division, where he scored nine goals and laid on seven assists.

He brings pace, attacking flair and a willingness to work hard, plus is also comfortable playing a deeper midfield role, bringing added versatility to Patrick Kisnorbo’s squad.

van der Venne will link up with his teammates in Melbourne next month as the team return to training in preparation for the 2022/23 A-League Men season.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said van der Venne’s attributes perfectly suit the profile of a City player.

“It was very important that we found the right player, and PK was very keen to ensure he was also of the right character,” Petrillo said.

“After considering our options and speaking with Richard, it was clear he was the one we wanted.

“I’m sure our fans will enjoy watching him play and we are excited by what he will bring to the team.”

Set to play outside of his home country for the first time in his career, van der Venne can’t wait to make the move to Melbourne with his young family.

“Many people have told me that Melbourne is a great place to live, and I’ve heard that the culture and people are great,” van der Venne said.

“I’m really looking forward to the move and I can’t wait to get to Melbourne next month and meet my teammates and the coaches.

“I’m very excited for this new adventure and to be joining a successful Club that is regularly competing for trophies.

“I’ve watched some games and the stadium and fans seem amazing. It excites me to know that this is where I’ll be playing for the next two years.”
