ALW PREVIEW: City v Sydney FC

Melbourne City will be aiming to continue our incredible run of form this Saturday, taking on Sydney FC as we look to extend our Club-record unbeaten streak to 20 matches.

Still yet to suffer defeat across all competitions this season, we face Sydney FC once again after two 1-1 draws away from home earlier in the Ninja A-League campaign.

Here are all the key storylines heading into Saturday night:

Maintaining momentum

City’s most recent outing saw us secure another important three points, defeating Newcastle 2-0 away from home last weekend. It was a hard-fought battle, with the deadlock finally broken in the 69th minute when Laura Hughes produced a stunning long-range strike to put us ahead.

Holly McNamara then sealed the result in the 84th minute with a brilliant solo effort, continuing her impressive form after netting a midweek hat-trick in our 5-1 win over Western United.

With an international break on the horizon, Saturday’s clash presents a perfect opportunity to sign off with another strong performance and keep our momentum rolling into the final stretch of the season.

Familiar foes

Saturday’s clash marks the third time we’ve faced Sydney FC this season, with both previous encounters ending in 1-1 draws.

Back in November last year, Lourdes Bosch quickly equalised after an early Sydney goal, while in January, Leticia McKenna’s second-half strike ensured we took a point from our trip to New South Wales.

Last season’s Grand Finalists have endured a tough campaign, currently sitting 11th on the ladder with just two wins to their name.

Despite their struggles, Sydney remains a dangerous opponent and will be eager to turn their fortunes around against an unbeaten City side.

What’s at stake?

With our undefeated streak on the line and the top of the table still tightly contested, City will be determined to keep our winning run alive and claim another crucial three points.

Although we hold a seven-point lead at the summit, most of our nearest challengers have a game in hand, meaning any slip-up could tighten the race as we approach the business end of the season.

With key players in form and confidence high, expect an exciting contest as City looks to continue our dominant campaign.
