Melbourne City captain, Rebekah Stott, reflected on the significance of the match.

“To captain this team, a special team, it’s such an honour for me. And to do it in the first AFC Women’s Champions League is incredible. We just want to make everyone proud and put on a good performance.”

City’s Quarter Final presents a unique opportunity for the side to showcase their ability on the international stage.

“It’s definitely exciting,” Holly McNamara said. “I think going into a competition where you might not know the opposition completely, but you kind of have some sort of idea. It’s exciting and it’s a good challenge, we’re really looking forward to it.”

Having grown up watching the UEFA Champions League, City stars Stott and McNamara reflected on the importance of having an international champions league of their own and the significance of playing on home soil.

“I grew up watching the UEFA Champions League, and back then there wasn’t a Women’s side of that. So to be able to have our own continental Champions League is really special,” Stott said. “It’s something I didn’t know was possible, so now to have little girls be able to watch us play in that competition, I think it’s really cool and gives them something to strive towards.”

“I think when we do get to play here [at home], it’s always special,” McNamara explained. “We all love playing here, I think we’ve all said it before, and not only in the league is it special, but I think playing in the Champions League here will be even more so, if we can get a good crowd around us, I think it’ll be very special.”

“It’ll be exciting to see how many people come out to watch us and to do it in one of the best stadiums in Australia will be unreal.”
