HERE TO STAY: Leah Davidson “still has so much more to achieve”

After back-to-back Premiers Plates, a historic Invincible season, and a breakthrough Matildas call-up, Leah Davidson isn’t done yet.

The ever-reliable midfielder has committed her future to City, putting pen to paper on a new two-year contract extension.

One of the Club’s most reliable performers, Davidson reflected on her journey so far: “I’ve grown so much over my time at City.”

TALKING BULLSHIP

The 24-year-old was a crucial figure during City’s historic run to the AFC Women’s Champions League Final, a competition she’s very much looking forward to competing in during the 2025/26 season.

Speaking on Talking Bullship, the official podcast of Melbourne City, the midfielder opened up on last season’s heartbreaking Champions League Final loss.

“That environment was something else,” Davidson said of the Final in Wuhan. “The crowd, the build-up, the pressure – it was one of the coolest atmospheres I’ve ever played in. I was a little bit nervous, but mostly just excited.”

She spoke candidly about the moment that almost sealed it, her late breakaway and assist for what looked like City’s match-winner, before VAR intervened.

“When the ball hit the net, I honestly thought, ‘We’ve done it.’ It was that feeling of this is ours… and then it wasn’t. But that’s football.”

Even so, the pain of the team’s defeat has only fuelled her focus.

“Everyone’s hungry to go again,” she said. “We know how close we came. And now we want more.”

Off the pitch, Davidson remains quietly influential, a calm, self-aware organiser, happy to be booking hotels for the squad’s off-season European adventure while keeping her Matildas cap safely tucked away at home.

She’s already earned four international caps since debuting in December 2024, scoring on debut and at just 24, the best is still to come.

“She’s developed into a consistently high performer,” said City Director of Football Michael Petrillo. “Her recent Matildas appearances are a reflection of the work she’s put in.”

“We’re confident Leah will continue to be an integral member of our squad as we pursue more success over the coming seasons.”
