The Melbourne City Powerchair Team celebrated the International Day of People with Disability by hosting a special Come & Try Day at Casey Basketball Stadium, welcoming participants of all ages and abilities for an afternoon of inclusion, community and football.
The event provided an opportunity for people with disability along with families, carers and supporters, to experience powerchair football firsthand. Attendees were able to try specialised sports powerchairs, practise ball control, learn passing techniques and take part in mini-games guided by Melbourne City’s experienced powerchair athletes.
Adding to the excitement, Ben Mazzeo, Zane Schriber, Emin Durakovic and Peter Antoniou attended and joined in the activities. The players met participants and families, took part in casual drills, learned how the sport works, and helped cheer on first-time players. Their involvement brought plenty of smiles and reinforced the club’s commitment to supporting inclusive sport at every level.

Captain and founder of the team, Luke David said: “Last year was a huge year for us, winning our first national championship in Brisbane. We know the benefits the sport brings to us and our community, we are hoping to grow that with more come and try days such as this one.
It was awesome to have the A-League players here too, the support from the club is always appreciated by our players and their families.”
City attacker Ben Mazzeo, said: “It was great to be part of the day and see everyone having so much fun. Meeting the powerchair athletes and watching them in action was really special.”

The day highlighted the fast, skilful and tactical nature of powerchair football, with many first-time participants surprised by the speed and precision involved. For others, the event offered a valuable pathway into adaptive sport, opening doors to new social connections, confidence and community engagement.
Held in recognition of the International Day of People with Disability, the event aligned with the day’s purpose of promoting greater understanding, visibility and participation for people living with disability. By creating accessible sporting opportunities, Melbourne City continues to champion inclusion across its programs, teams and community activities.
The club encourages anyone interested in powerchair sport, whether as a player, volunteer or supporter, to get involved. The Melbourne City Powerchair Team continues to welcome new members and families throughout the year and remains committed to growing the sport across Victoria.
