ALW SF LEG 1 REPORT: Victory 0-1 City

Melbourne City did what was required in Saturday’s Ninja A-League Semi Final First Leg, claiming a hard-fought 1-0 win to take a valuable advantage into next week’s decider.

In a tightly contested and often cagey encounter, it was a moment of brilliance from Leticia McKenna that proved the difference, with her powerful free kick on the stroke of half-time finding its way through a sea of bodies and into the back of the net.

Shelby McMahon, Leah Davidson and goalscorer McKenna lined up through midfield, while Bryleeh Henry, Aideen Keane and Holly McNamara led the attack.

What happened?

City made a bright start to the contest, nearly striking inside the opening five minutes when Davidson let fly from distance, her effort flashing just wide of the target.

The early stages saw both sides trade periods of possession, with neither able to fully assert control as the intensity of Finals football was on full display. City began to grow into the game midway through the half, creating a number of promising opportunities.

A well-worked move down the flank saw McNamara deliver a dangerous cross into the area, with Henry’s initial effort blocked before Davidson followed up with a header that forced a strong save from the Victory goalkeeper.

McNamara continued to look lively in attack and went close herself just after the half-hour mark, unleashing a powerful long-range strike that sailed narrowly past the top corner.

With the first half seemingly destined to end scoreless, City found the breakthrough at the perfect time. Awarded a free kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box, McKenna stepped up and delivered a fierce strike that pierced through a crowded penalty area and beat the goalkeeper, giving City a deserved lead heading into the break.

Buoyed by the goal, City carried that momentum into the second half and again started strongly. Slick combination play between McMahon, McKenna and McNamara opened up Victory’s defence, with McNamara’s powerful effort brilliantly saved before McKenna’s follow-up was scrambled away.

City continued to press and felt we had a strong case for a penalty shortly after, when McNamara was brought down inside the area, but play was waved on.

In midfield, McMahon was outstanding throughout, with the 17-year-old producing a composed and energetic performance to help City control the tempo.

Defensively, the back four stood tall, limiting Victory’s opportunities and dealing well with any forward pressure.

As the game wore on, clear-cut chances became harder to come by, with City managing the contest effectively and maintaining control in key moments. While Victory looked to find a way back into the game, City’s defensive structure remained resolute, ensuring the one-goal advantage was preserved.

In the end, it was a disciplined and professional performance, with McKenna’s first-half strike enough to separate the sides and give City a valuable edge heading into the second leg.

What’s next?

The all-important Second Leg awaits next weekend, which we’ll enter with a handy one-goal advantage.
