What happened?

The contest began evenly, with both sides searching for control in the early stages. City looked the more dangerous team going forward, however, creating several promising opportunities as we settled into the match.

Our first major chance arrived in the 23rd minute following a well-worked attacking move. Christian Polyzoudis forced a strong save with a powerful right-footed effort before Ballah created another promising opening moments later, only to be denied by the Thunder goalkeeper once again.

As the half progressed, City continued to build pressure and confidence. Isiah Boston came close to finding the breakthrough with a dangerous effort of his own, but another sharp stop from the visiting keeper kept the scores level.

Our patience was eventually rewarded just before the break. A neat passage of play from the back worked the ball into the path of Beckham Baker, whose strike cannoned into the post. The rebound fell kindly for Ballah, who reacted quickest to fire a first-time finish into the back of the net and hand City a deserved lead heading into half-time.

City carried that momentum into the second half, looking to maintain control and continue asking questions of the Thunder defence.

The visitors gradually worked their way into the contest and began putting City under sustained pressure, but our defence stood firm. Captain Ryan Kalms led the way with a number of important defensive interventions, cutting out attacks and dealing well with dangerous deliveries into the area.

James Nieuwenhuizen was called into action in the 63rd minute, producing a strong save to preserve our advantage. The rebound fell to Ballah, who quickly released Lawrence Wong to spark a counter-attack before City earned a free kick in a dangerous position. Beckham Baker struck the resulting set piece well, only to see his effort crash against the woodwork.

Thunder continued to search for an equaliser and came agonisingly close moments later when a dangerous cross flashed across the face of goal without a touch before drifting narrowly wide of the far post.

City responded strongly and soon regained control. Beckham Baker again threatened with an excellent delivery to the back post, where Ballah’s header was well saved by the goalkeeper.

Our pressure eventually paid off in the 79th minute. Mathew Baker threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Ballah, who raced clear before calmly finishing past the advancing goalkeeper to double the lead and put the result beyond doubt.

City managed the closing stages professionally, limiting Thunder’s opportunities and seeing out a deserved 2-0 victory to continue our strong run of form.
