The 2026/27 season may have only just begun, but one thing is already abundantly clear.
The future is bright.
Sunday’s 3-0 Australia Cup victory over Weston Bears wasn’t just the perfect way to kick off our competitive campaign; it was another powerful reminder of the strength of Melbourne City’s Academy and the pathway continuing to produce first-team talent.
Wherever you looked, Academy graduates were making their mark.
Ten of the 11 players in Aurelio Vidmar’s starting side came through the City Academy, with experienced defender Harrison Delbridge the only exception as he helped marshal one of the youngest starting XIs in Club history. Across the entire matchday squad, Andrew Nabbout was the only other player not to have graduated from the Academy.
The starting XI featured the most City Academy graduates in Club history, while the matchday squad equalled the previous record (16 of 18) set in last season’s Australia Cup Round of 32.
Dig a little deeper and the story becomes even more remarkable.
Four members of Sunday’s squad; Lawrence Wong, Peter Antoniou, Jayden Necovski and Lachie Charles, have progressed through the Club’s entire Player Development Pathway, beginning their journeys in City Football Schools before advancing through every age group of the Academy and into the senior setup.

And when the goals came, they came from the next generation too.
Lawrence Wong opened the scoring inside six minutes before 17-year-old Besian Kutleshi and Medin Memeti put the result beyond doubt late in the contest, meaning all three goals were scored by Academy graduates with an average age of just 18.
It wasn’t just the goalscorers making headlines either.
Second-half introductions Roland Ballah and Isiah Boston both made their senior debuts, becoming the latest Academy products to take the next step after impressing throughout recent seasons in City’s senior Academy program.
With an average age of just 21 across the starting XI, Sunday’s performance offered another glimpse into the exciting future being built at the City Football Academy, Melbourne – ctrl:cyber Campus.
The result secured our place in the Australia Cup Round of 16, but perhaps just as importantly, it provided yet another reminder that the pathway continues to deliver.
And if Sunday’s performance was anything to go by, there are plenty more Academy success stories still to come.
