ALW REPORT: Sydney FC 0-5 City

Melbourne City continued our perfect start to the 2026/27 Ninja A-League season with a commanding 5-0 victory over Sydney FC on Sunday evening.

A stunning first-half performance saw Michael Matricciani’s side race to a four-goal advantage before Melina Ayres added another from the penalty spot shortly after the break.

With four different players finding the back of the net and a couple of exciting professional debuts, it was an impressive evening on the road as we made it two wins from two to begin our Premiership and Championship defence.

Team News

Matricciani made two changes to his starting XI following last weekend’s season-opening victory over Wellington Phoenix.

Captain Rebekah Stott returned to the heart of defence, while young midfielder Avaani Prakash was handed her first City start.

Shelby McMahon was unavailable after remaining in Melbourne due to a minor niggle sustained late in the week.

Starting XI: 24. Malena MIERES (GK), 16. Karly ROESTBAKKEN, 13. Rebekah STOTT (C), 4. Jessika NASH, 22. Taylor RAY, 8. Momo HAYASHI, 11. Deven JACKSON, 10. Avaani PRAKASH, 21. Aideen KEANE, 9. Cortnee VINE, 14. Melina AYRES.

Substitutes: 23. Melissa BARBIERI (GK), 5. Aimee MEDWIN, 15. Tully HEATLEY, 20. Kelli McGROARTY, 26. Izabella RAKO, 27. Chelsea BIGGS, 29. Layla HABIB.

What happened?

It was a delayed start to proceedings at Allianz Stadium, with lightning in the area pushing kick-off back by just over an hour.

But once the action finally got underway, City wasted little time getting on the front foot.

Facing her former side, Cortnee Vine won a corner inside the opening 40 seconds, setting the tone for what would become a dominant attacking display.

After an evenly contested opening 10 minutes, City burst into life with two goals in the space of just three minutes.

Vine got the scoring underway, finishing off a brilliant team move to open her City account against her former Club.

And we barely had time to celebrate before Momo Hayashi doubled the advantage.

Fresh off her spectacular match-winning free kick against Wellington last weekend, the Japanese midfielder produced another moment of quality, unleashing a powerful strike into the back of the net to make it two goals in as many games.

City were showing no signs of slowing down.

Deven Jackson made it 3-0 in the 24th minute, curling a beautiful effort beyond the Sydney goalkeeper as Matricciani’s side continued to cause problems with every attack.

And before the half-hour mark, the advantage had grown to four, with an unfortunate Sydney own goal capping off a remarkable spell of attacking football.

While her name wasn’t on the scoresheet, Aideen Keane was one of the standout performers, playing a key role in City’s attacking combinations and having a hand in almost everything going forward.

The winger also came agonisingly close to adding a goal of her own, striking the crossbar, while Vine was similarly denied a second by the woodwork.

By the time the half-time whistle arrived, City held a commanding 4-0 advantage – and it could easily have been more.

There was little let-up after the restart, with Ayres forcing a flying save from the Sydney goalkeeper in the 50th minute as City looked to pick up where we left off.

Just two minutes later, Keane was brought down inside the penalty area, giving Ayres the chance to add a fifth.

For the second consecutive week, the returning striker stepped up to the spot and made no mistake, emphatically dispatching her penalty to extend the lead to 5-0.

Ayres almost had another just minutes later after being teed up by Vine, only to see her effort brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar.

With the result firmly in City’s control, Matricciani turned to his bench in the 63rd minute, introducing Aimee Medwin, Kelli McGroarty and Tully Heatley, with the latter making her professional debut.

City continued to dominate possession as the second half progressed, although clear-cut chances became less frequent.

There was still time for another special milestone, with young defender Chelsea Biggs entering the contest for her own professional debut with around 10 minutes remaining.

From there, City comfortably saw out the closing stages, completing a memorable five-goal victory and maintaining our perfect start to the new campaign.

What’s next?

It’s time to turn our attention to continental football!

City will now head to Uzbekistan for the 2026/27 AFC Women’s Champions League Group Stage, where three matches in less than a week await.

With a place in the knockout stages on the line, Matricciani’s squad will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the third consecutive season.
