Match Preview: City v Adelaide

Melbourne City FC will be looking to record a third-consecutive win when it comes up against Adelaide United as it vies for top spot in the A-League Men.

The teams will be meeting for the third time this season and, following two draws away from home, the City boys will be hoping that a home AAMI Park crowd can get them over the line to tilt the season ledger in their favour.

City had a productive New South Wales road trip last week, beating Newcastle Jets 4-2 on Tuesday and then Western Sydney Wanderers 3-1 on Friday night.

In both games, the City boys looked frighteningly good in attack as Jamie Maclaren, Andrew Nabbout, Mathew Leckie and Florin Berenguer ran rampant across the two fixtures.

The team will continue searching for defensive improvement given the final scorelines, though the Wanderers’ goal on Friday arrived only from the penalty spot amidst an overall lack of chances afforded by the City backline.

Fans will be very familiar with our upcoming opposition given the see-sawing nature of the two meetings between Melbourne City and Adelaide United that fans have already seen this season.

Both meetings at Coopers Stadium ended in 2-2 draws, but City had lead at crucial stages of both games before conceding all four goals in the final third of each clash.

Most recently, the Reds played out a competitive 1-1 draw with Wellington Phoenix in which youngster Bernardo Oliveira crucially rescued a point for his side with a 92nd minute strike.

Middling in terms of their defensive performances, it’s been all about attack for Adelaide this season, with the Reds recording the equal-third-most goals per game. It’s been the timing of these that has frustrated many opposition sides, City included, as a staggering 50% of their goals have arrived in the final 15 minutes of games.

Given that 38% of City’s goals conceded have arrived in this period, home fans at AAMI Park could be in for a tense climax if the contest hasn’t been put out of reach by the boys before that point.
