New recruit David Williams has revealed he harbours ambitions of returning to the Socceroos fold ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
The attacker earned his sole international cap during the Socceroos 2010 World Cup qualifier against China at Sydney-s Olympic Stadium, but has been unable to add to his tally since returning to the A-League.
However, under the guidance of Head Coach John van ‘t Schip, Williams says he is eager to once again experience the thrill of representing his nation at international level.
“Playing for the Socceroos is definitely still a major ambition for me that never leaves my head, I had a taste of it and still want more,” Williams said.
“Sometimes the overseas players have to put their clubs first and that leaves options for A-League players to come in when games are here in Australia.”
Williams though also cited the example of Brisbane Roar Captain Matt McKay, who earned his place in the Socceroos Asian Cup squad off the back of sterling performances for the reigning champions.
And with McKay now well entrenched in the Socceroo set-up, Williams sees no reason why other A-League players won-t be able to do the same in future under current coach Holger Osieck.
“I think Matty’s done excellent to grab his chance and hang onto a spot even mixing it with players that are playing overseas,” Williams said.
“There’s no reason why any other A-League player can’t, if you’re performing well there’s no reason why the coach can’t pick you and then it’s just a matter of taking your opportunities.”
