Melbourne City FC is a professional football club that competes in the major Australian domestic competitions, the A-Leagues.
The Club, formerly known as Melbourne Heart FC, was established in 2009, inspired by a vision for a broad-based community team, celebrating cultural diversity and sporting passion through football.
Becoming known as Melbourne City FC in 2014, the Club is wholly owned by the City Football Group and plays its home games at AAMI Park, a 30,000-capacity stadium in the heart of Melbourne’s sporting precinct.
Since its inception, the Club has built a reputation as one of Australia’s best on and off the pitch with a proud history of youth development and on-pitch success for both men’s and women’s teams.
Melbourne City has secured several trophies in recent years with an A-League Men’s Championship (2020/21), three A-League Men’s Premierships (2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23) and one FFA Cup (2016).
City re-wrote the record books in 2023, becoming the first team in A-League Men’s history to win three consecutive Premiers Plates.
The Women’s team, which formed in 2015, have been crowned A-League Women’s Champions four times (2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2019/20) as well as A-League Women’s Premiers on three occasions (2015/16, 2019/20, 2023/24).
Melbourne City has also been crowned A-Leagues Club Champions on two occasions (2021/22, 2022/23).
The Club’s state-of-the-art training and administrative base is located at the City Football Academy, Melbourne – ctrl:cyber Campus at Casey Fields – following a relocation from the Club’s former training group, CFA Melbourne (Bundoora) in July 2021.
Setting a new standard for football in Australia, the facility is home to the Club’s elite Men’s and Women’s teams, six Academy teams, and Administration department; as well as hosting the Club’s registered charity, City in the Community, and grassroots program, the Melbourne City Football School.
MELBOURNE CITY WOMEN
During their inaugural season, the team earned Invincibles status with a 100 per cent record, winning 12 consecutive league matches and clinching the Premiers Plate before securing an historic double by winning the 2016 Grand Final.
In 2017, they made history again when they won the Grand Final for a second consecutive year; the first team in the competition to win back-to-back titles. In 2018, the team went one further, entering the realms of sporting elite in completing a fairy-tale three-peat.
In 2020, City created even more history, becoming the first team in the competition’s history to win four Championship titles after they secured their second Invincible season with the Premiership and Championship double after defeating Sydney FC 1-0 at AAMI Park in the 2019/20 Grand Final.
Led by former City player, Dario Vidosic, City secured their third A-League Women’s Premiers Plate following a dramatic last day of the 2023/24 season. The team will compete in the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League during the 2024/25 season.
ACADEMY
Melbourne City FC’s Academy Program was introduced in 2016, when two additional development squads were established to provide a pathway for talented young Victorians.
The Club’s youth system includes the National Youth League, National Premier Leagues Seniors and U20 teams, while the Academy squads for U11–U19 players are provided with training, coaching and development opportunities within a professional environment at the City Football Academy.
Melbourne City’s National Youth League team delivered the Club’s first trophy in February 2015, winning the Youth League on the final day of the season. Two years later the NYL team defeated Sydney FC to win the same trophy for the second time.
Continuing to set the benchmark for youth development in Australia, City has had over 25 Academy graduates make their senior debuts for the Club, with a number of players earning their first Socceroos caps while playing for Melbourne City.
