STAR TRIO RETURN: McNamara, Pollicina and Davidson re-sign with City

Melbourne City FC is delighted to announce the re-signing of star A-League Women’s trio Holly McNamara, Rhianna Pollicina and Leah Davidson.

McNamara, Pollicina and Davidson have all penned new two-year deals with the club, extending their stay through to the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.

One of Australia’s brightest young talents, McNamara burst onto the scene with City during the 2021/22 season, her first in professional football. The 20-year-old’s form during her maiden season at City saw her earn her first call up to the Matildas squad, making three appearances at the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

After overcoming a major knee injury, the former Young Footballer of the Year finished last season’s campaign in stellar form, showcasing why she’s one of the competition’s most threatening attackers.

Pollicina has also re-committed to Melbourne City after further establishing herself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the A-League Women’s competition last season.

The 26-year-old midfielder notched her 50th A-League Women’s appearance in City’s final match of the 2022/23 season, with 34 of those coming in City colours.

Pollicina found the back of the net 10 times last season, including an Elimination Final brace, as she took out City’s Golden Boot. Her strong form saw her named in the PFA A-League Women’s Team of the Season for the second year in a row.

Joining McNamara and Pollicina to re-commit to City, is the ever-reliable Davidson.

An underrated engine in the midfield with leadership beyond her years, the 22-year-old re-signs for a fourth consecutive season at the club.

In what was a major blow for Head Coach Dario Vidosic’s side, Davidson’s 2022/23 season was cut short due to an ankle injury sustained at training.

With 52 A-League Women’s appearances, 41 of those in City blue, Davidson’s return is a major boost to Vidosic’s midfield.

A-League Women’s Head Coach, Dario Vidosic, said:

“It’s important to have three key members of our squad re-commit to the club ahead of the upcoming season. We’re building an exciting squad, full of young Australian talent, that are sure to please City fans.

“To have a player of Holly’s quality return is really pleasing. She is one of the most exciting young footballers in Australia, and her work ethic combined with her talent makes her a real asset to our team.

“Rhianna has been one of our standout performers over the past two years, and her experience and leadership will help guide our younger players.

“Leah is a highly valued member of our team, she has been one of the team’s most consistent performers in recent years and we’re thrilled to have her back.”

Holly McNamara said:

“I’m really looking forward to the upcoming campaign and believe we can build on the foundations of last season and take our game to another level. We’ve got a great group of girls and we’re more motivated than ever.

“As a player there’s no better place to be in Australia, than at City. We play an exciting brand of football and we’re all really excited to move into our brand new facility in the coming months.”

Rhianna Pollicina said:

It was an easy decision to return to City. I love the club, the team and the style of football we play here. We have unfinished business to achieve as a group.

“The Women’s World Cup was something special and it really brought Australia together. The Matildas got the support they deserve and I’m looking forward to this support continuing into the A-Leagues and having a successful season.”

Leah Davidson said:

“I’m so happy to be back at City for a fourth season. We’ve got a great group of players, a mix of experience and youth, who share the same values and ambitions to go one step further this season.

“It’s a really exciting time for Women’s football in Australia and we can’t wait to ride the wave of the World Cup with the support of the City fans.”
