PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Trewin and Otto take out top honours

Melbourne City celebrated an unforgettable 2024/25 season on Monday night, with players and staff coming together for the annual Player of the Year Awards, recognising standout performances across both A-League Men’s and Women’s squads.

Held just 48 hours after the Club’s A-League Men’s Championship win, the evening was a chance to reflect on a season that also saw the A-League Women’s team claim the Premiers Plate after a historic unbeaten campaign and the Club as a whole secure the A-Leagues Club Championship, recognising overall excellence across both senior programs.

TOP HONOURS

Kai Trewin was the standout on the men’s side, capping off a stellar debut season at City by claiming both the Scott Jamieson Medal (Player of the Year) and Players’ Player award.

The versatile defender impressed with his consistency, composure, and leadership throughout the campaign, earning widespread recognition, including selection in the PFA Team of the Season.

For our Women’s team, Taylor Otto was awarded the Player of the Year following an exceptional season at the heart of City’s defence.

Calm under pressure and technically superb, Otto played a pivotal role in the team’s undefeated regular season and was also named in the PFA Team of the Season.

AWARD WINNERS

Rising Stars

Young fullback Alexia Apostolakis was named the A-League Women’s Rising Star after a breakout first season at the Club, playing a crucial role in the team’s success which also saw her earn selection in the PFA Team of the Season.

On the Men’s side, Medin Memeti claimed the Rising Star award following a standout senior season, scoring five goals and stepping up as a key attacking threat at just 17 years old.

Holly McNamara

Holly McNamara capped off a sensational comeback season with both the Women’s Golden Boot and Players’ Player awards.

Scoring 15 goals in just 19 A-League appearances, she was also crowned the A-League Women’s Golden Boot winner. 

She earned the admiration of her teammates not just for what she delivered on the pitch, but with resilience, humility, and a team-first attitude. 

Golden Boot – Men

The Men’s Golden Boot was shared between Max Caputo and Yonatan Cohen.

Caputo returned from a long-term injury to play a key role in the back half of the season, while Cohen, in his first year at the Club, scored the Grand Final winner to secure City’s A-League Men’s Championship.

Melissa Barbieri Award

The Melissa Barbieri Award, recognising the player who best embodies the Club’s values, went to Laura Hughes.

Known for her consistency, positivity, and professionalism both on and off the pitch, Hughes was a popular and deserving recipient, also earning her first national team call-up this season.

Curtis Good Award

Club captain Aziz Behich received the Curtis Good Award for his exceptional leadership, professionalism, and unwavering support to teammates and coaching staff, all while playing a crucial role in City’s Championship-winning campaign during his first season as captain.

A Night to Remember

CEO Brad Rowse opened the evening by congratulating players, staff, and commercial partners, and acknowledged the Club’s three major trophies, a historic achievement reflecting the shared effort and success across all departments.

With messages from players currently on international duty, highlights from the season, and moments of reflection, the 2024/25 Player of the Year Awards capped off one of the most successful seasons in Melbourne City history.
