TEAM OF THE YEAR: City Powerchair team nominated for VDSR award

Melbourne City Powerchair team has been named a finalist in the Team of the Year category at the 2025 Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation (VDSR) Awards.

Revealed by Disability Sport and Recreation earlier this week, the annual VDSR Awards celebrate the athletes, volunteers, coaches, teams and programs driving inclusive sport and recreation across the state.

City’s Powerchair team has been recognised for its impact, nominated alongside the Victorian Mens Ivor Burge Basketball Team (Basketball Victoria) and Team Victoria (Victorian Goalball Association Inc).

The nomination is another milestone moment for the side, which became the first Powerchair team affiliated with a Victorian A-League club after it was established in 2015 by local fans Luke David and Craig Kilby in partnership with City in the Community.

Powerchair Football is a fast-paced, competitive version of indoor football, specifically designed for people with physical disabilities who use powerchairs for mobility.

Since its inception, the Melbourne City Powerchair team has gone from strength to strength, creating a pathway for local players to compete at the highest level while proudly representing the Club.

Earlier this year, City’s Powerchair side were crowned champions after an unbeaten tournament saw them take out the National Club Championships.

City Powerchair captain Luke David said the nomination was a proud moment for everyone involved.

“To be nominated as Team of the Year is something really special. We’ve worked hard to grow the team and build a strong culture on and off the court, so to see that recognised in this way means a lot to all of us,” David said.

“We’re proud to represent Melbourne City and to help show what inclusive sport can achieve.”

This year’s VDSR Awards will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s Dillbabiik Room on Tuesday 26 August, with winners to be announced across several categories.

Everyone at Melbourne City congratulates our Powerchair team on their well-deserved nomination and acknowledges their continued contribution to inclusive sport in Victoria.
