INTERNATIONAL CITY: Premiers shine on international stage

Melbourne City’s Premiership-winning squad was well represented across the globe during the April FIFA international window, with a number of players delivering standout performances for their national teams.

From silverware in Africa to World Cup qualification in Oceania and a strong showing in Asia, City players made their mark in green and gold and beyond.

Take a look at our international wrap below…

McNamara and McKenna crowned FIFA Series champions

Holly McNamara and Leticia McKenna were part of the CommBank Matildas squad that claimed FIFA Series 2026™ honours in Kenya, with both players finding the back of the net across the tournament.

McKenna enjoyed a memorable debut, coming on as a second-half substitute in Australia’s 5-0 win over Malawi and making an immediate impact with a goal off the bench.

Speaking on her debut, McKenna said: “I went a bit numb when I scored. I just smiled. It was incredibly special to do that on debut. I know my family will be very proud watching back at home.”

McNamara also got on the scoresheet in the same match, continuing her strong form in front of goal.

In the final, Australia secured a 2-0 win over hosts Kenya to lift the trophy, with McNamara featuring as a second-half substitute.

Stott and Jackson help New Zealand qualify for 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup

Rebekah Stott and Deven Jackson played key roles in New Zealand’s successful FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ qualifying campaign.

The Football Ferns opened their campaign with a 5-0 win over Fiji to book a place in the final, before defeating Papua New Guinea 1-0 at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium to secure qualification.

Both City players started in each match, with Jackson providing a constant attacking threat in the decider, while Stott delivered a standout performance anchoring the midfield and was named Player of the Match in the final.

The pair combined for what looked to be the opening goal in the final, only for Jackson’s finish to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Young Matildas trio represent Australia in Asia

Alexia Apostolakis, Shelby McMahon and Danella Butrus represented Australia at the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup, with Apostolakis captaining the side throughout the tournament.

The Young Matildas produced a strong showing before their campaign came to an end in the quarter-finals, where they were defeated by a strong North Korea outfit.

Apostolakis started each of the Young Matildas fixtures, as Butrus scored her first international goal with a clinical finish against India in the Group Stage.

All seven City stars will now return to Melbourne as Michael Matricciani’s side shifts their focus to the upcoming Ninja A-League Finals Series.
