Avondale hosted City at Avenger Park for the first time in the NPL, with our side eager to secure all three points after a run of consecutive draws. Despite a determined performance, the hosts proved clinical on the day, scoring three goals to claim the result.

What happened?

It was a promising start from both sides, with City creating an early opportunity from a throw-in deep in the attacking half. Jayden Necovski rose well to meet the delivery, but his powerful header flew just over the crossbar.

Angus Mackintosh looked lively through midfield, finding pockets of space and driving City forward, although we were unable to break through Avondale’s well-organised defensive line. The hosts responded with intensity, progressing the ball quickly and creating several promising chances of their own, but City’s defence held firm, with Necovski particularly influential in disrupting attacking moves.

The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute, as Avondale took the lead through a close-range left-footed finish from George Ott, leaving Lachlan Charles with little chance.

City responded positively despite Avondale enjoying a strong share of possession. A free kick presented a great opportunity, with Lawrence Wong stepping up and producing a powerful strike that deflected off the wall, forcing Avondale goalkeeper Jack Gibson into a sharp save.

We continued to apply pressure and earned a corner in the 38th minute, again taken by Wong. His delivery found a dangerous area at the back post, but City were unable to apply the finishing touch.

After the break, City came out with renewed intent, regaining possession high up the pitch, but continued to find it difficult to break down a compact Avondale defence.

In the 51st minute, Avondale threatened again from a set piece, forcing Charles into a brave save to keep us within reach. However, the pressure eventually told, with the hosts doubling their lead in the 68th minute through Bruno Fornaroli, who finished from close range inside the six-yard box.

City responded almost immediately. With the intensity lifting, we moved the ball quickly through the lines and found space in behind. Roland Ballah delivered a dangerous cross from the left, picking out Aaron Cartwright at the back post, who finished well to pull a goal back and give us renewed belief.

Momentum began to build as City pushed for an equaliser, but it wasn’t long before Avondale restored their two-goal advantage. Blake Carpenter struck a free kick superbly, leaving Charles with no chance.

City continued to press in the closing stages and showed strong intent, but were ultimately unable to capitalise on our chances, falling to a 3-1 defeat despite a determined performance.

What’s next?

City will now regroup ahead of a return home to face Hume City next Sunday, where we’ll look to build on the positives and return to winning form.
