DREAM DEBUT: Beach stars on World Cup debut as Socceroos sink Türkiye

Patrick Beach delivered a world-class performance on the biggest stage of his career, producing a stunning clean sheet on FIFA World Cup 2026™ debut as Australia defeated Türkiye 2-0 in Vancouver, Canada.

The win marked Australia’s first ever victory over Türkiye and provided the perfect start to their Group D campaign, with Beach playing a decisive role in securing all three points.

Named by Socceroos coach Tony Popovic ahead of captain Mat Ryan, the Melbourne City goalkeeper repaid that faith in emphatic fashion, producing eight saves in a remarkable display that underlined why he has become one of Australia’s premier shot-stoppers and one of City’s most important players.

Making just his third appearance for Australia, Beach was called into action repeatedly against a dangerous Türkiye side and rose to every challenge.

His standout moment came in the 30th minute when he produced a breathtaking full-stretch save to deny Türkiye an equaliser just three minutes after Australia had taken the lead.

The opening goal itself began with Beach.

The City goalkeeper made a strong save before quickly launching Australia forward, releasing the ball into midfield where Paul Okon-Engstler delivered a superb pass over the top for Nestory Irankunda. The attacker controlled brilliantly before calmly finishing to give the Socceroos a 27th-minute advantage.

Beach continued to frustrate Türkiye throughout the contest, making three saves from inside the penalty area and commanding his box confidently as Australia absorbed periods of heavy pressure.

The 22-year-old was named in the starting XI alongside Melbourne City Academy graduates Jordy Bos and Connor Metcalfe, while former City midfielder Aiden O’Neill also featured from the outset.

As Beach continued to keep Türkiye at bay, Metcalfe delivered the decisive second goal in the 75th minute, unleashing a brilliant low strike from outside the area to double Australia’s advantage and put the result beyond doubt.

City captain Aziz Behich entered the contest in the 84th minute, replacing Bos and helping Australia see out the final stages with his trademark experience and composure.

Despite Türkiye throwing everything forward in search of a way back into the game, Beach and the Australian defence stood firm to secure a clean sheet and a memorable opening match victory.

For Beach, it was a performance that showcased the qualities City fans have become accustomed to seeing week after week, outstanding reflexes, calm decision-making and an ability to deliver in the biggest moments.

This time, however, he did it on football’s biggest stage.

Backed in by his coach and trusted with the responsibility of starting Australia’s FIFA World Cup 2026™ opener, Beach produced a display that will live long in the memory, helping the Socceroos launch their campaign in perfect fashion.

The Socceroos focus now turns to the United States of America, where they’ll take on the hosts on Saturday in Seattle.
