The clash
Melbourne City will play its first pre-season friendly under new Head Coach Erick Mombaerts when they take on NPL Victoria side Oakleigh Cannons at Jack Edwards Reserve on Tuesday night.
Mombaerts’ squad has been in pre-season training for three weeks since the Frenchman’s arrival at CFA Melbourne, and will be looking to ramp up their preparations ahead of their FFA Cup Round of 32 clash with Campbelltown City at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre on Wednesday 31 July.
Tuesday night’s clash gives supporters a chance to watch City’s new recruits for the first time, as the playing squad will be eager to put in a strong shift under the new manager.
The task won’t be easy, coming up against the in-form team of the National Premier League competition in Victoria. Oakleigh have won their last five league fixtures and are undefeated in the past 10 games, which has seen them climb into sixth position following a slow start to the season.
Oakleigh attacker Wade Dekker will match up against his former side, with the attacker no doubt eager to extend his strong run of NPL form when he comes up against his old side.
With City preparing for the FFA Cup Round of 32 and Oakleigh looking to finish their league season strongly, both teams will be looking to have solid performances in what is set to be a competitive fixture in Melbourne’s South-East.
