Australian Youth International trades Celtic hoops for City blue

Melbourne City FC is thrilled to announce the signing of promising Australian defender Liam Bonetig, who joins the Club on a three-year deal following an agreement with Scottish giants Celtic FC.

The 20-year-old returns home after two seasons in Glasgow, where he featured prominently for the Celtic’s B Team and gained valuable experience in both the UEFA Youth League and Lowland League.

Born in Shellharbour, New South Wales, he made his move to Europe in September 2023.

Standing at 193cm, Bonetig is comfortable on the ball and technically well-suited to the City style of play. Known for his aerial strength, ability to play out from the back and composure on the ball, he possesses great vision and strong leadership skills.

Bonetig is a regular in the Young Socceroos setup and has represented Australia at multiple youth levels, including international training camps and tournaments.

His arrival adds depth and quality to Melbourne City’s defensive unit ahead of the Club’s A-League Men’s Championship defence and upcoming AFC Champions League campaign.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome Liam to Melbourne City. He’s a talented young defender with significant potential, and his time in Europe has accelerated his development.

“Liam’s attributes align well with our playing philosophy, and we believe he’ll grow into a valuable contributor to the squad over the coming seasons.”

Liam Bonetig said:

“It’s a really exciting moment for me to return to Australia and to be able to join the reigning Champions makes it even more special.

“I’ve learnt a lot over in Scotland over the past two years and I’m hungry to keep improving. There’s no better environment to do that in Australia than at City.

“I can’t wait to get started and do everything I can to help the team have another big season and win more trophies for the City fans.”
