KANAMORI: I’ve always dreamed of playing overseas

Melbourne City’s newest recruit, Takeshi Kanamori, says a lifelong dream of playing overseas made his move to the Club an easy decision.

The experienced Japanese forward arrives with over 400 professional appearances to his name and a decorated career that includes an AFC Champions League title, the Japanese Super Cup and the League Cup. After more than a decade competing at the highest level in his homeland, Kanamori is now eager to embrace the challenge of Australian football.

“From a young age, I’ve always had a dream of playing overseas, especially in the A-League,” he explained via a translator. “So when the chance came to come here, I was really excited to make the move.”

Since landing in Melbourne, Kanamori has wasted no time familiarising himself with his new surroundings and settling into life at City Football Academy. He was quick to praise the environment he has found in Melbourne, highlighting the Club’s first-class facilities as a place where he can thrive.

“The facilities here are fantastic, and the environment is great. It really allows me to focus on football, and I think it will help me grow a lot as a player,” he said.

Kanamori has also felt right at home thanks to the warm welcome from his new teammates and coaches. “Everyone has been so welcoming and kind. Even though it’s only been a few days, I already feel really comfortable here.”

On the pitch, the versatile attacker has built his reputation on intelligent movement, creativity and a tireless work ethic. He believes these qualities, combined with his wealth of J-League and continental experience, will allow him to make an immediate impact in City colours.

“I’ve scored goals and played well at the highest level, both in the J-League and the Champions League,” he said. “I’ve gained a lot of experience and I feel I can bring this to help take Melbourne City to the next level.”

While Kanamori admits he is keen to contribute goals and assists, his focus is firmly on team success.

“Winning back-to-back championships is the real goal, and I believe I can definitely help make that happen.”

And his message to City fans? Simple: “I can’t wait to meet the supporters. I’ll give everything to prove myself to you all, through goals, assists and hard work.”
